Sweet Hours cover

Beth Rowley - Sweet Hours

Everyone knows Duffy and Adele but before either of them there was Beth Rowley. She has a voice that is as soulful as they come and has the ability to make you melt; melt away. Before accepting the imitations, try out the original first.

Mercury cover

Bloc Party - Mercury

Bloc Party have developed a habit of releasing singles in between albums andMercury is another case of this trait. If you love Bloc Party you won’t be disappointed, although the experimental nature of this track may take a while to adapt to.

She Left Me cover

Go: Audio - She Left Me

Go:Audio are one of those bands that leave my opinions divided. On one hand they are a generic steady pop rock band built for teenage girls to fawn over, the other side to that is that they are a band that play their own instruments; so that can’t be all bad. A half decent pop tune, nothing less.

The Girl I Love cover

Hamfatter - The Girl I Love

As seen on Dragons Den, another new dimension is added to music with a band having their record funded by a multi millionaire, but believe it or not I am actually more interested in finding out if the record is any good! And surprisingly it isn’t bad at all; almost interesting! Next week I review an album paid for by Ikea……

Sleep Through The Static (Single) cover

Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static (Single)

The title track from his latest album and the key word is sleep, as that’s exactly what you will want to do. I like the occasional mellow song but this track isn’t mellow, it is dullness personified. It goes nowhere and does nothing for anyone listening.

Saturday cover

Kids in Glass Houses - Saturday

Kids in Glass Houses are one of the current crop of ‘cool’ bands... heaven knows why! I am probably missing the point somewhere. They almost make me think of them as a junior version of Lost Prophets; I am pleased that I am old enough to listen to the undiluted version.

The Spike cover

The Music - The Spike

I remember when The Music were the so called "Best New Band" in the country, that is a few years ago now and things change. The electro pop tinged darkness is now quite possibly too much for people; remember the majority seem to want brainless music.

Meccano cover

Red Light Company - Meccano

I first heard of Red Light Company as a result of a recommendation from a friend; she is better at spotting real talent than most. This song takes elements of popular ‘indie’ sing along and the more intricate musical arrangements of such bands as Elbow. In short I like it, Buy it Now.

Lights Out cover

Santogold - Lights Out

You will take an immediate liking to this song, but that will remain about the same amount of time as a British female player at Wimbledon, and we know that isn’t long. It is harmless enough but soon it starts to fade from memory.

Love is Noise cover

The Verve - Love is Noise

The long awaited return of The Verve; they appear to have decided to recruit some chimpanzees as backing singers, now that is novel. Besides the valiant efforts of their primate friends this fails to distinguish itself from an Ashcroft single release. Return the chimps to PG Tips and return The Verve to a retirement home in Wigan! Thank You.
