Matinee Club

Matinee Club are an electro-pop trio from East London. The band consists of vocalist, Emma Cooke and keyboardists/vocalists, Nathan Cooper and Chi Tudor-Hart. Originally a five piece, the band have had notable success in the UK as The Modern with the single Jane Falls Down, which was released through Mercury Records in November 2005, and peaked at number 35 on the UK singles chart. The follow up single, Industry was released in March 2006, but was disqualified from charting due to irregular sales patterns. Had it been allowed to chart with the irregular sales deducted, it would still have gone top 30.
In September 2006, it was announced that the band’s drummer, Bob Malkowski and guitarist Robert James had decided to leave the band. News also came through of a new record deal following the unfair dismissal from Mercury Records, claiming that they only wanted indie-rock bands on their label. The band were quickly snapped up by new electro label Planet Clique in the UK and Ninth Wave records in the USA under the new band name, Matinee Club. Discotheque Francais was released on single in March 2007.
In August 2007, it was declared that the group had signed a five album contract with Europa Recordings, a sister label of Universal Music. This was short lived, as the label was closed due to cut backs by Universal. Matinee Club then transferred back to Planet Clique for the release of the single Sometimes and the issue of the début album, Modern Industry, which will be released in January. In the US, The Modern LP will also be released in February, and has gone top 5 on the New Wave chart through downloads alone.
