Gossip - Standing In The Way of Control
The Gossip formed in 1999 in Arkansas, they released their first album in 2001. Vocalist Beth Ditto is the main focal point of the band. This album their 3rd studio release since their formation has seen them breakthrough to the mainstream.
The title track has seen them catapulted in the spotlight. You will instantly recognise it from the Channel 4 series Skins. It is a catchy song which filled me with hope for the album.
It begins steadily enough with a familiar retro disco sound that I had already heard from them. It was like being transported back to school disco in the 80's. Beth Ditto certainly has a excellent voice, but this hasn't been used to best effect.
Just when you think you know what you are listening to it changes direction. They attempt to slip into a soul sound although the vocals are good enough lyrically and musically it's weak.
Image has been used to promote this band a lot. Some of that time would of been better spent trying to make the best music for the talent they have.
The highlight of the album of the album is Coal to Diamonds. The reason is the music is simple and understated and it concentrates on the stunning vocals Ditto provides.
Rating 5/10 - Worth a listen when the price is right
