Duran Duran - Red Carpet Massacre
The popular 1980’s band have re-invented themselves once again. This time they’ve gone down the R’n’B road…Oh dear!
When I heard that the album featured additional input from Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, I was both worried and horrified. However, upon hearing the debut single from the album, Falling Down, it appeared that the group had merely revisited the sound they made in the late 1980’s, so I was looking forward to hearing the album.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed with it. Three quarters of the tracks on the album sound like rejected Rihanna b-sides. I hate to say it, as Duran Duran are one of my top 5 favourite bands, but this album is a disaster!
The only other two tracks on the album that are vaguely interesting are Nite-Runner and Tempted. They could easily both fit nicely onto a Timbaland album, which isn’t really a complement, but they do sound excellent compared to the rest of the album.
Overall, I am appalled. Duran Duran should go back to a synth sound, if they do have another album, and not desert their faithful fans, just to attempt to make more money from a younger generation. Cliff Richard hasn’t turned hip hop, yet he sells his albums sufficiently, so why did Duran Duran bother converting to urban when their last album went top 5?
