Crowded House - Time On Earth

Time On Earth cover

Crowded House return with their first studio since 1993. This album was never meant to happen; I thought I'd clear that up at the very beginning. This should of been Neil Finn's 3rd solo album. Liam Finn has replaced his Uncle Tim for this album. The sole reason it came to be a Crowded House album was because of the death of former member Paul Hester.

After such a long gap the world has moved on a lot since their last release. As it opens you have a slight doubt whether anyone has mentioned to them it is now 2007. Their classic songs of old still linger in the air and maybe because of the circumstances still linger in the band. Nostalgia can bring back the memories and make you think of the past with a smile, but as something ages it can also go stale.

Woodface was a beautifully constructed album and left a mark on all that bought it. As I was mentioning time changes everything; its since 16 years that album the 20 somethings that bought are now middle aged, the younger audience of that time are now approaching 30, so they will switch on for memories of those times.

Another point before I move on, don't trust your memory to make things better.

Crowded House obviously remember what made them good, what people liked about them and how to recreate it. What they have done is follow the formula, maybe that was a good idea in theory but that was a recipe of a group of 30 somethings not a group of middle aged men. Granted they have tried to tweak it by inviting Johnny Marr and Beth Rowley to guest with them; the result of this is a very crowded house!

To clarify a few things before I end this review. They have decided to comeback for more important reasons than money. There isn't a bad song on the album, in the same respect there isn't one you are going to remember a hour after switching it off. The only 2 things I have issue with on this album. Firstly it spoils memories for both fans and the band. Secondly they have tried so hard with it they have ended up imitating themselves.

Rating 5/10 Time has run its course, thanks for the memories
